Markdown is a tool developed primarily for web-writers. Basically you write in plain text and then use simple mark-up that creates .html code. Here is the developer’s website. One site I reviewed described the tool as a “lightweight markup language based on the formatting conventions that people naturally use in email.” Markdown is free and there are versions for Windows, iOS, and Unix. Most editors are also free, but you can pay a few dollars for  extra features like full CSS integration, .pdf  output, links to Dropbox. etc. It is hard to give an idea of just how easy it is to write in Markdown. Here is a screenshot from Markdown Pad, a Windows-based editor.

I used Markdown to recreate notes from German classes at San Jose State University.  The main point of Markdown is .html output so the file will open in your browser.  See the German classes tab for more info on the courses.
